How to care for beeswax candles
A few simple habits and your candle will burn calmly, cleanly and for as long as possible.
Trim the wick before lighting
The ideal wick length is about 5 mm. A longer wick smokes and makes the flame needlessly tall, while a shorter one may drown in the melted wax.
The first burn matters most
The first time you light the candle, let it burn until the whole top surface has melted right to the edges. With wider candles this can take several hours. The candle then “remembers” its burning width and will not tunnel.
Keep the candle out of draughts
In a draught the flame flickers, the candle burns unevenly, drips and may smoke. Stand it away from open windows, doors and fans.
Snuff it out, do not blow
The best way is to smother the flame with a snuffer, or to dip the wick briefly into the melted wax and straighten it again. The candle will not smoke and will be easy to light next time.
Simply buff away the white bloom
A fine whitish film is natural on genuine beeswax. Buff it with a soft dry cloth or warm it briefly with a hairdryer.
Store in a cool, dark place
Keep candles in a dry, cool place out of direct sunlight. They will stay beautiful for longer.
Safety first
- Never leave a burning candle unattended.
- Place it on a stable, non-flammable surface or in a candle holder.
- Keep it away from children, pets and flammable items (curtains, paper, dried flowers).
- Leave at least 10 cm of free space between burning candles.
- Extinguish the candle when about 1 cm of wax remains above the base or the surface beneath.
